Doctors Find 27 Contact Lenses Stuck In This Woman's Eye
She was scheduled for cataract surgery, but the operation was postponed following the discovery.
A 67-year-old woman initially scheduled for a cataract surgery got the shock of her life when doctors found 27 contact lenses stuck in one eye
Rupal Morjaria, an ophthalmologist at Solihull Hospital in the UK, shared a harrowing story about a 67-year-old patient scheduled for a cataract surgery.
Upon examining the woman's eye before the surgery, the operating team discovered 17 contact lenses, sealed together in a "bluish mass" in her eye.
The case, which took place last November, was published in the British Medical Journal.
The contact lenses were causing the woman discomfort, but she had initially thought it was due to dry eye and old age
Medics initially found 17 contact lenses - but then discovered a further 10 on a second inspection, reported the Daily Mail.
The woman said she was unaware that the lenses were missing.
"None of us has ever seen this before. It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together," said Morjaria.
The pensioner had been wearing monthly disposable contact lenses for the past 35 years, but did not go for regular check up appointments
The woman has since recovered from the discomfort.
“She was quite shocked. When she was seen two weeks after I removed the lenses she said her eyes felt a lot more comfortable. She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye," said Morjaria as quoted by The Straits Times.
