Malaysian Airlines will screen Tanda Putera to its staff as part of anniversary celebrations

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) kicked of its month-long celebrations on Oct 1 in conjunction with its 41st anniversary with a special screening of ‘Tanda Putera’ for its staff and by awarding a team of MAS staff with the iCAN award for their recent success in scaling the Himalayas last month.

To commemorate the celebration, the national carrier treated its staff to a special screening of Tanda Putera at the MAS Academy in Kelana Jaya.

Ahmad Jauhari said the film contains a lot of historical content which is related to the airline. "It will bring fond memories to our senior staff and act as a motivational boost for the junior ones," he said.

Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad said, “This is a good film, a historical one which is suitable to be shown to the young. We don’t have any problem in screening the film anywhere."

“This is shameful and sad,” said Finas Compulsory Screening Scheme (CSS) chairman Datuk Mustapha Maarof, pointing out that the film production cost was RM4.8 million.

The controversial movie has been reduced to being screened in cinemas with smaller seating capacity. It has only collected RM500k from ticket sales from opening day till Mon, 2 Sept 2013.

Film director Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba isn't surprised with the poor reception to her government-backed film, "We knew we couldn't be able to make any money from this, but we did it anyway because it had to be done."

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department proposes film be made topic of academic study

Datuk Seri Najib Razak Bakal Berlakon Drama Khas Kemerdekaan

Datuk Razali Ibrahim has proposed that the film “Tanda Putera” be made a topic of academic study by students and academicians at the institutions of higher learning (IPT).

“It is good if it is studied, especially by undergraduates, so they can evaluate and criticize it from various perspectives and the actual meaning of the story."

Razali, who is Umno Youth IPT Bureau chairman, said he would ask the bureau to study the content of the film, which was produced by Pesona Pictures and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas).

Razali, who is also Umno Youth vice-chief, "The storyline shouldn't be questioned although there are certain scenes which do affect emotions. The film is based on history, but what's important is the lesson (from the history)."

Anwar said the Penang government's decision is flawed as, "Malaysia is an independent country and everyone is entitled to their views."

Anwar agreed that the film was made to help Barisan Nasional, “What's regretful is that the film promotes BN propaganda & even the director herself, Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, admitted that the film is a work of fiction.

“It is overly done, the film is promoted in Felda schemes, schools, universities and probably in every lesson in the National Civics Bureau (BTN)...you don't promote it like it is a communist-style propaganda."

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng advices against screening of "Tanda Putera" because it has slanderous scenes that could provoke racial hatred

The Penang government has asked all cinema operators in the state not to screen the movie Tanda Putera scheduled for screening today, 29 Aug 2013.

"In compliance with Penang State Government’s directive (as per letter by Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang dated August 28, 2013), GSC will not be screening the movie “Tanda Putera” in its cinemas in Penang." - GSC

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government didn't impose a ban, "We only issued an advisory. No action will be taken against cinema operators who cintinue to screen the movie despite our advice."

However, film operators have no choice but to screen the Tanda Putera movie, as it is categorised under the must-screen rule (Syarat Wajib Tayang) by the authorities.

Tanda Putera's public screening next week will show several controversial scenes

The controversial Tanda Putera movie will begin screening in cinemas nationwide on August 29 with several contentious scenes still intact, including one depicting a young Chinese man urinating in front of the Selangor Menteri Besar's official residence.

During the movie's early promotion last year, the production team uploaded the photograph of DAP's Lim Kit Siang, with the caption "Lim Kit Siang telah kencing di bawah tiang bendera Selangor di kediaman Menteri Besar Selangor" on the movie's official Facebook page.

Controversial dialogues include "Orang Melayu pergi balik kampung" (Malays return to your villages) or a murder scene in a cinema where Chinese characters are writing "Melayu pergi mati" (Malays go die) on the screen before the victim is stabbed.

In the film, the director seemed to portray the Chinese community as being responsible for the May 13 riots. And this was the contention of DAP leaders earlier who had said the movie was a Barisan Nasional (BN) propaganda film which can cause racial disharmony.

A scene in the controversial film Tanda Putera, where a group of Chinese youths urinate on a flag pole at former Selangor menteri besar Harun Idris' house is "fictional" and "impossible", said a May 13, 1969 riot witness.

Tanda Putera director Shuhaimi Baba, who insisted that she based the film on historical documents and witness interviews, reportedly said the person urinating on the flagpole was not Lim.

Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba urged Malaysians today to watch “Tanda Putera” for themselves before judging the controversial film that has earned widespread criticism for its portrayal of events during the May 13, 1969, riots.

Shuhaimi said the movie showed the friendship between two leaders, Tun Abdul Razak and his deputy, Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, and how they faced the challenge of developing the country while battling racial tension and their health problems.

“And yes, we hope Malaysians will come forward to support local films, and you can judge for yourselves once you’ve seen this movie,” she added, in apparent plea for fair viewing from Malaysians ahead of “Tanda Putera’s” public screening.

DAP bantah tayangan 'Tanda Putera' and drama 'Interlok'

“Let me warn the BN government that if it takes a position to punish the voters for not supporting BN in the general election, then there will definitely be a stronger Malaysian tsunami against BN in the next general election,” he added.

He said national unity must be placed above petty politics and warned that there will be huge public outcry if the government proceed with the matter.

“Is it true that the Interlok’s return is to teach the Chinese and Indians a lesson for not supporting BN (Barisan Nasional) in the just concluded general election?” said DAP national vice-chairman M. Kulasegaran in a statement.

“Interlok”, which is part of the Form Five Bahasa Malaysia syllabus in government schools, raised the ire of Indian and Chinese groups in 2011 for using the word “pariah” and for depicting Chinese characters as greedy, opium-smoking lechers.

"Finas telah mengadakan mesyuarat jawatankuasa (Wajib Tayang) yang dipengerusikan Datuk Mustapha Maarof (pengerusi jawatankuasa itu), dan keputusan yang dibuat jawatankuasa itu ialah filem 'Tanda Putera' akan ditayangkan 29 Ogos ini," katanya.

DAP sedih Tsu Koon membenarkan tayangan tertutup Tanda Putera

Lim Guan Eng kesal Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon yang membenarkan filem kontroversi Tanda Putera disiarkan secara tertutup walaupun tidak membenarkan ia disiarkan secara terbuka.

Yesterday, Koh said: “As long as there is no public screening, for that is the decision that was made by the Cabinet”.

“There have been some private screenings for people to make some judgments and decisions.”

“Saya rasa sedih kerana Tsu Koon kata siaran terbuka itu teruk, tetapi baik jika ia dilakukan secara tertutup," kata Lim.

Lim questioned the logic behind the Gerakan president’s statement, using the analogy of pornographic films.

There is no problem screening the controversial film Tanda Putera privately but not to the open public, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“But we have decided for the present moment that it is not suitable for screening in cinemas,” he added.

He stressed that the movie is not allowed to be screened in the open or to the public, saying he had seen the results for himself.

Bersih has urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to put an end to "closed screenings" of controversial film ‘Tanda Putera'.

Bersih committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said: "if need be, screen the movie for all Malaysians so that it can be judged by the public".
