Fireman Passes Away After Losing Consciousness During Melaka Flood Rescue

A Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Department firefighter has passed away after losing consciousness during a flood rescue operation in Ayer Keroh, Melaka

According to Bernama, 46-year-old Mohd Diya Che Jusoh died at 3.11am today, 21 October, while undergoing treatment at the Emergency and Trauma Department of Melaka Hospital.

In the 5.30pm incident, The Star reported that the firemen were overwhelmed by the rushing chest-high flood waters when Mohd Diya was believed to have lost his balance, was swept away by the strong undercurrents, and almost drowned.

According to Utusan, it took the teamwork of firefighters and residents to retrieve him back to safety within 10 minutes.

The firefighters tried to resuscitate Mohd Diya. However, he remained unconscious as they rushed him to Melaka Hospital.

At the hospital, Mohd Diya was still unconscious and relied entirely on breathing aid until he took his last breath, said Melaka Fire and Rescue Department director Abu Bakar Katain

"The staff of the Melaka Fire and Rescue Department express their condolences and are deeply saddened by the incident," the director said in a statement this morning, as quoted by Sinar Harian.

The firefighter was buried at the Masjid An-Nur Cemetery in Krubong at 10am today.
