On 14 February, a man who brutalised and robbed a woman inside a lift at the MRT's Taman Mutiara station also left members of the public feeling outraged and concerned at the ease with which the crime was committed, highlighting the lack of safety at RapidKL

In response, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana), the operator of RapidKL, has said that it has stepped up security at its MRT stations following the brutal incident.

What exactly are the security measures being taken by RapidKL?

First off, closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) recordings inside its lifts will now be displayed directly to staff on duty

According to Prasarana, as an extra precautionary measure, the images are now pre-set on the main screen so that any incident could be viewed and known faster.

Members of the Special Action Force (SAT) have been increased and added to several hotspots around its stations

"We have increased the number of Special Action Taskforce (SAT) members at the hotspot areas. The SAT team is a special unit set up by Prasarana’s security department and staff are dressed in plainclothes when on patrol duty," the operator said.

Additionally, passengers who are worried about their safety can request a RapidKL staff member to escort them to their car

"Rapid KL passengers can request to be escorted to the parking lots if the area is quiet and if they need any help," Prasarana said in a statement on Monday.

The RapidKL operator added that those who require such assistance can inform the customer service counters at any MRT, LRT, Monorail, or BRT stations.

It also called on the public to be cautious and watchful over their personal safety, especially in public places and to avoid deserted routes or places.
