Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Dr Mahathir announced Friday night that all PH parties have agreed to use PKR's logo for GE14

"I'm very happy that something that would have otherwise been impossible has been achieved (today)," Dr Mahathir said during the Johor Pakatan Harapan Tour (Jelajah Pakatan Harapan Johor) event in Pasir Gudang last night, 6 April.

"It is my pleasure to announce to Malaysia and the world that Pakatan Harapan, including Bersatu, will share PKR's symbol," Dr Mahathir announced while wearing a Parti KeADILan Rakyat (PKR) badge on his red coloured shirt.

Dr M admitted it - for DAP, Amanah, and PPBM to drop their party symbols in favour of the PKR logo for GE14 - was a tough decision

"DAP has used the 'rocket' symbol for almost 60 years. The other component parties love their respective symbols, but because we want to unite, these four parties will use a common symbol," Dr M said while urging supporters to choose the logo of the PKR, more popularly called KeADILan, Anwar Ibrahim's party. He was Dr M's former protégé.

Anwar, who founded the PKR (People's Justice Party or Parti KeADILan Rakyat), is serving jail time for a sodomy charge. He will be released from prison on 8 June.

The decision, however, has certainly made PKR happy

Party President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said it was a "great” feeling to see Dr Mahathir using her husband's party logo as a common symbol for the GE14.

"The most important thing is to show the unity of Harapan. It is a blessing in disguise that (despite) the ROS deregistering Bersatu, it shows that we are together.

"This is a symbolic thing that shows Anwar in the background when we use the symbol of PKR for Harapan," she was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

A photo by the Malay Mail Online's photojournalist Ben Tan shows the PH leaders at last night's event waving together flags with the PKR logo that they have agreed to use as the coalition's official symbol for GE14.

The PH parties are showing they are unrattled despite the coalition failing to get itself registered with the Registrar of Societies (RoS)

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has refused to recognise the PH coalition and has held off on its approval, citing continued problems with Dr Mahathir's PPBM.

The Ros has ordered a one-month suspension on Dr Mahathir's Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia for alleged irregularities, effectively ruling the party out of the upcoming GE14.

However, while Pakatan Harapan parties have agreed to use the PKR logo as a common symbol for GE14, the PH parties in Sabah and Sarawak will continue to use their respective parties' logos

"This was a big decision for us, to be able to exercise our autonomy and decide for ourselves. We chose to use our own respective party flags. So, PKR, DAP and Amanah flags will be used here," Sabah PH chairman Christina Liew was quoted as saying by The Malay Mail Online at a press conference yesterday, 6 April.

Meanwhile, it is the first time since 1969 that DAP's 'rocket', one of the most recognisable party logos in Malaysia, has been grounded

The DAP Central Executive Committee's decision has left all party leaders, supporters and members in pain, according to DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

However, he said that while the decision to not use the party's iconic rocket logo for GE14 was a "most painful and heart-wrenching" one yet it was necessary because of the "opportunity in many decades for a change of Federal government and for Malaysia to take the first step to become a normal democracy where voters can change the government peacefully and democratically through the ballot box."

The DAP leader said, "We want to ensure not only individual candidates and DAP can win in the GE14, we also want to ensure that all Harapan candidates and all the four component parties can win and form the next federal government.

"The suggestion that PKR, Amanah and Bersatu use a common Harapan logo while DAP keeps its rocket logo is not an option, for we must be able to convey to Malaysian voters the inspiring message that all four parties are united as one political force to Save Malaysia to resolve the economic problems of the people as well as to undertake the formidable task of reforming national institutions."
