[UPDATED] Nothing Wrong With Burning Bibles Threat, Dr. M Said

Ibrahim Ali, the notorious President and Founder of Perkasa, a controversial Malay supremacy NGO, made headlines again with his threat to burn Malay Bibles using the word 'Allah'. He also threatened to stop supporting Barisan Nasional after being chastised by their leaders.

“It is normal procedure to burn banned books but I don’t think he [Ibrahim] wanted to insult the Bible. It was just his opinion,” Dr. M said.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has defended controversial Malay rights group President Datuk Ibrahim Ali over his suggestion to burn Malay-language Bibles recently.

“Usually, if there is a publication that has been banned, the action taken is to burn these books," Dr. M said.

Dr Mahathir told a press conference here that Ibrahim Ali had merely been referring to a common practice of burning publications that have been identified as illegal.

Former A-G wants action taken against Ibrahim Ali now

Police chief said the investigation report on the matter was ready to be handed to the Attorney-General's Chambers.

"Ahli Perkasa tidak mendapat sebarang risalah, jadi saya rasa itu cuma khabar angin untuk membakar kebencian selepas kenyataan Datuk Ibrahim Ali," kata Syed Hassan.

“We do not plan any more to burn (bibles),” Perkasa secretary-general said. “We never planned to organise a (bible-burning) fest,” he added.

Selepas bantahan dari orang ramai mengenai ugutan membakar kitab Injil minggu lalu, Perkasa berkata mereka tidak lagi mahu membakar buku suci itu.

Perkasa and churches to meet

As at 10am, no sign of people arriving to gather at the venue to burn the Bible as claimed by fliers allegedly distributed in the Butterworth area recently.

The state police is expected to summon Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali soon to facilitate investigation into his alleged call for Muslims to burn the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Bible.

The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code for uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person as well as the Sedition Act.

The police take the matter very seriously and will investigate his alleged statement thoroughly. Ibrahim Ali will be called again (for further investigations) in a few days.

"I take this very seriously...this is a matter of our national harmony and I will not tolerate those who carried out such activities that could jeopardise that," said Penang police chief.

Muslims nationwide should condemn Perkasa’s threat to burn all Malay-language Bibles, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali has called lawyer Syahredzan Johan a traitor for saying that the Federal Constitution has never stated Islam is the country’s “official religion”.
