A reclusive woman's body was eaten by her own cats

The body of a reclusive British woman was "gnawed and eaten" by her starving pets after she died, according to a coroner's inquest. By the time British police discovered the body of Janet Veal, she'd apparently been dead for as long as three months.

Her house made for a grim scene, littered with the carcasses of numerous pet cats and dogs that had been confined in the house and died of apparent starvation. But then investigators discovered something worse: Veal's remaining cats had survived by feeding on her corpse.

It is believed Veal had died from natural causes after suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Her husband is thought to have left her a year before she died.

The post-mortem proved “extremely difficult” due to the extent of decomposition but pathologist Dr Vipul Foria concluded that the death was “possibly” due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Neighbors described the woman as "reclusive," according to the Independent. According to the Daily Echo, Veal was estranged from her husband, who had left her last year.

Coroner says it was a 'distressing experience'

Recording a death from natural causes, coroner Keith Wiseman said: 'These animals had been, the officer thought, confined in these two rooms downstairs for what may well have been a period of many weeks, stretching quite possibly into several months.'

He added: 'This too was a distressing experience because it was clear that certain parts of Mrs Veal’s body were missing and had, the officer formed the view, effectively been gnawed and eaten away by the animals.

He added: ‘One can only imagine the difficulty with the scene the officer was having to deal with.’
