[JUST IN] Malaysia Reports Largest Increase Of COVID-19 Cases In A Day With 212 Positive
There is currently a total of 1,518 COVID-19 cases in Malaysia.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced a total of 212 new COVID-19 cases today, 23 March
In a press conference announcing the daily COVID-19 updates, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the number of cases in Malaysia to a total of 1,518.
This has been the largest increase of cases in a day since 15 March, which recorded 190 cases then.
Out of the 212 new cases, MOH reports 123 of them are linked to the Sri Petaling Jamek Mosque tabligh gathering.
Meanwhile, 57 of the total number of cases are in Intensive Care Units around the country, with 27 of them requiring breathing assistance.
A total of 14 people have died from COVID-19 in Malaysia, three more from yesterday's total
The latest three deaths today are:
A 70-year-old Malaysian man who attended the tabligh assembly and was being treated at Hospital Kluang.
A 49-year-old Malaysian man who was being treated at Sarawak General Hospital, and who was also the son of the fifth COVID-19 death in Malaysia on 18 March.
The last victim was a 51-year-old Malaysian woman, who was a close contact of a tabligh participant and was being treated in Hospital Miri.
Dr Noor Hisham also announced that they will now be testing all tabligh participants regardless of whether they have symptoms or not
The religious gathering was attended by over 14,500 Malaysians.
With the new cases recorded today, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia from the tabligh gathering has crossed 900, making it 62% of the number of cases in the country.
