Former Selangor MB Khir Toyo Is Now A Free Man

He is now freed on parole.

Former Selangor Menteri Besar, Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo was released on parole yesterday, 29 March, after serving half of his one-year prison term

A source with the Malaysian Prisons Department said Dr Khir was granted parole after the parole board members gave the green light to the application by Khir’s counsel.

“Yes, he was released on police bail this (29 March) evening,” said the lawyer when contacted.

Khir was convicted and sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Shah Alam High Court in 2011 for misusing his position as then Selangor MB and Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) chairman to purchase land and property below the market price in 2007

Khir will be on parole for the next two months, where he is to remain in the areas of Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya, following which he will be free

Khir was also required to report to the Parole Board's office in Klang each week and to adhere to 41 conditions during the parole period.

"He must also be home between 7pm and 7am and cannot issue any statement to the media," a source told Bernama.

Under the parole system, the prisoner will serve his remaining sentence outside the prison and live with his family while under the supervision of a parole officer.

When contacted by The Star, Khir said that he was "fine" although he sounded like he was "tired"

“I am well and healthy, and everything has been all right,” said the ex-Sungai Panjang assemblyman and two-term mentri besar (2000-2008).

He could not comment further as it was one of 41 conditions by which he was bound under his parole.

On 29 September 2015, the Federal Court upheld the Shah Alam High Court's decision that found Khir guilty of graft and sentenced him to 12 months jail

Mohamad Khir was charged with purchasing himself two plots of land and a bungalow, worth RM3.5 million in Shah Alam on 23 December, 2004.

He was given a 12-month sentence by judge Datuk Wira Mohtarudin Baki at the Shah Alam High Court on 23 December, 2011.

The Federal Court upheld his conviction for corruption on 29 September, last year.

The former Sungai Panjang assemblyman was charged with committing the offence at the Menteri Besar official residence in Section 7, Shah Alam on May 29, 2007.
