The blast went off near the front door of the building, slightly damaging the structure, chief of National Police Detective Lt. Gen. Sutarman told reporters at the scene.

The incident occurred days ahead of festivities planned to celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation, and most people practice a moderate form of the religion.

The temple, one of the biggest in Jakarta, said it hoped the blasts would “not cause any unrest in the religious community.”

The bombs were apparently placed outside the building, and the blast caused minimal damage. Police were investigating and continuing to sweep the area, said Sutarman, who uses only one name like many Indonesians.

There has been growing anger in Indonesia at the plight of the Rohingya Muslim minority in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. In May police foiled a plot to bomb the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta by Islamic hard-liners while reports of violence in Myanmar routinely trigger protests in the capital.

Statement from the Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali said the perpetrators of Sunday’s bombing of Ekayana Buddhist Vihara in West Jakarta did not respect the sanctity of the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan and could therefore be considered “accursed and barbaric”.

“The faithful should not be inflamed by the incident,” Suryadharma told journalists in Jakarta on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency. The minister said it was hoped that the bombing would not disrupt relations between Muslims and Buddhists.
