In Singapore, a 41-year-old man who shared a flat with his father was unaware that the 63-year-old had been dead for three days

It was at around 5pm on Thursday, 23 May, that he noticed an unpleasant odour emanating from his father's room in their flat at Block 109 Hougang Avenue 1, prompting him to realise that something was amiss.

At first, he thought his cat had died, but upon finding it roaming in the living room, Riduan (transliteration from Mandarin) proceeded to knock on his father's door, only to receive no response.

Speaking to Chinese evening daily Shin Min Daily News, Riduan shared that after his mother died last year, his father would usually stay alone in his room with the door locked.

Uncertain about what to do, Riduan called his relatives, and together they found the key to unlock the door.

When they opened the door, Riduan was shocked by the sight

He discovered his father's lifeless body in the toilet, with blood and maggots coming out of his head.

"I entered the room and saw that my father wasn't on the bed. Then I glanced into the toilet and saw my father lying on his side with blood around his head. I also saw some maggots on his head," he said.

"I last saw him at about 8pm on Monday, 20 May, when he came out to grab some food before going back to his room. Since my dad rarely leaves his room, I didn't think much of it at the time," he explained.

According to Riduan, his father had previously scolded him for knocking on his door and disturbing his sleep.

Singapore police have since confirmed the case

The police said that they had received a report regarding an unnatural death, where a 63-year-old man was found lying at home and was pronounced dead on the spot by hospital staff who were called to the scene.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play.
