"Cucu Wants To Speak" - Netizens Condemn MPs' Behaviour Toward Syed Saddiq In Parliament
The brief exchange has since gone viral on Twitter.
During the Parliamentary sitting yesterday, 13 July, several Members of Parliament (MPs) interrupted a debate with comments teasing Muar MP Syed Saddiq's age
Just as the 27-year-old stood up, ready to respond to Langkawi MP Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's points regarding the change in Dewan Rakyat speaker, Padang Rengas MP Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz interjected saying, "Muar, go jump hurdles."
Tanjong Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar then added, "Grandson, grandson wants to speak."
After a brief moment of silence, where Dr Mahathir and Syed Saddiq remained standing, Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim exclaimed, "Ask grandpa (referring to Dr Mahathir) why he resigned."
"Can I interject," asked Syed Saddiq.
Noh Omar then interrupted, saying, "Give way to grandson, grandson wants to interject."
Several MPs continued to hurl comments at the Muar MP as he was speaking.
A clip of the two-minute exchange has since gone viral with over two million views and 61,000 likes on Twitter
The tweet read, "Look at what happens when young people want to debate properly. @SyedSaddiq was teased and made fun of by older Dewan members."
The video was retweeted by Syed Saddiq without any additional comments.
Many netizens were concerned with the lack of professionalism shown by the older and more experienced MPs
Other netizens praised the Muar MP for remaining calm and persisting with the debate
Meanwhile, several Twitter users suggested that this was not an issue of age as similar exchanges occurred between different MPs throughout the day
