Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that the government is currently looking into reviewing the present strategy in place to combat the pandemic

During the press conference announcing the daily COVID-19 updates on 6 January, he said, "We need to review the strategies that we implemented since 14 October. Our decision in allowing interdistrict travel on 7 December resulted in the rise in cases."

He also added that although everyone is urged to abide by standard operating procedures (SOPs), cases are still high and the Ministry of Health (MOH) expects it to increase in a week or two.

Furthermore, he said our health system has been pressured and we are at a breaking point because cases are increasing each day.

"The government should make the decision as soon as possible," he urged.

He hopes that with the advice from the ministry, the government would make the right decision to ensure the spread of COVID-19 is brought under control, without having to disrupt the lives and livelihoods of the people.

"We need to strategise and look into the details of the targeted states and zones. It is difficult for us to strike a balance between health and the economy," he noted.

Yesterday, Malaysia registered a record high of 2,593 cases

Selangor topped the list as the number one state with the most new COVID-19 cases, followed by Johor and Sabah.
