A surprise inspection conducted by the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) of the Perak Contingent Police Headquarters has exposed a significant security breach at the Central Police Station lockup in Ipoh
The raid, which took place last Tuesday between 9.30pm and 3.00am, was triggered by a public tip-off and resulted in the discovery of various prohibited items, including narcotics, a mobile phone, and sharp weapons within a cell housing four male detainees, according to Harian Metro.
Initial searches led to the discovery of a smartphone hidden on one of the detainees
However, a more thorough sweep of the cell, conducted in the presence of all occupants, uncovered even more concerning items.
Officers found a "Fire Sens" box containing 22 transparent plastic packets of suspected heroin weighing 4.23g, alongside a separate packet of suspected methamphetamine weighing 1.6g.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine how the contraband was smuggled into a high-security facility
He clarified that the detainees involved were not local to the Ipoh district, but were "transit" prisoners from Taiping who had been temporarily moved to the Ipoh District Police Headquarters to attend court proceedings.
Noor Hisam said authorities are now examining the entry process closely, including how the items bypassed standard security protocols.
A police report has since been lodged with the Ipoh District Narcotic Criminal Investigation Division (BSJND)
All confiscated drugs and communication devices have been handed over to the relevant departments to assist with intelligence gathering and to identify potential masterminds behind drug distribution activities within the detention centre.
Perak police also reiterated that they will not compromise on integrity and are determined to uncover whether any internal negligence contributed to the incident.
