PM Cancels Official New Year's Eve Celebration In Respect Of The Floods

This is the second year in a row that the national New Year's Eve celebration will be cancelled.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government has decided to cancel the upcoming New Year's Eve celebration that is usually held at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

According to New Straits Times, the decision comes after a Cabinet meeting today, 21 December, citing the floods in several states as the reason.

"Seeing that there are (several states affected by) floods, and the hardship of the people, the government has decided to cancel the large-scale New Year's celebration at Dataran Merdeka," he was quoted as saying.

Malay Mail reported that the 2022 celebration was cancelled and Islamic worship events were held instead as a sign of respect and sympathy for flood victims in several states in Malaysia.

As of yesterday, 20 December, 66,718 people have been displaced by the floods. They are currently taking shelter at temporary relief centres across five states.

Of the affected states, Terengganu and Kelantan continue to witness an increase in the number of victims.
