Police Report Lodged Against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim
The police report was lodged at the Dang Wangi police headquarters by Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy youth chief Wan Fayhsal against Anwar for alleging that PN's election campaign funds came from gaming companies.
Opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) has lodged a police report against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for alleging that PN's election campaign funds came from gaming companies
PN deputy youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters, called the allegations an attempt to discredit all of its 73 members of parliament (MPs).
According to the Machang MP, PN will not protect or condone any sort of wrongdoing.
"I, as an MP, vehemently deny the accusations that we received funding from gambling companies. I believe that the rakyat will not believe these lies as PN leaders like Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have already made statements," he said.
Wan Fayhsal said that the act of lodging the police report is proof that the coalition took Anwar's claims seriously and has nothing to hide
He, however, refused to disclose the breakdown of PN's political funding.
"We will not be presenting the list. No political parties have done that (present a list of funds received) before," he said, adding that the coalition is ready to debate a Political Funding Bill in parliament.
"If [Political Funding Bill] is among the main issues, then go ahead. I, too, call for this. It was supposed to be solved during Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's tenure but parliament had already been dissolved, so there was no time for that. It's all right. We should wait for the next parliamentary sitting for this," he said.
For context, a political financing law regulates how political parties and politicians receive and spend money by requiring disclosure of the source of funds and donations, as well as the amounts received.
Meanwhile, he said that the police report that he lodged includes a denial of PN misappropriating RM600 billion in government funds
"It's not just about the allegations about gambling companies, but the issue of the RM600 billion that was allegedly spent without following proper procedure... these are all lies and serious allegations," he said.
According to Wan Fayhsal, if Anwar wants to know the truth about the allegedly misappropriated funds, then he should simply ask Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who is part of the new Cabinet.
"He was in charge during the whole period of the stimulus packages issued by the government. He (Anwar) is trying to play perceptions, trying to tarnish our image, and playing politics in the very first week he held the Cabinet. What is this kind of government you are expecting from Pakatan Harapan?" Wan Fayhsal said.
Zafrul was the finance minister during Muhyiddin's administration and continued in the same role in Ismail Sabri's administration. Zafrul now holds the International Trade and Industry portfolio.
