Did Kim Jong-un Execute His Ex-GF in a Firing Squad?

South Korean news sources are reporting that singer Hyon Song-wol, reputed ex-lover of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, was among a dozen artists who were executed for violating anti-pornography laws.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper said Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was arrested with 11 others on August 17. All 12 were machine-gunned down by a firing squad 3 days later, while members of their immediate family were forced to watch.

They were accused of videotaping themselves having sex and selling the videos. The tapes have apparently gone on sale in China as well.

One source told the newspaper that some of the victims were clutching Bibles as they were killed in front of their loved ones — who were then ordered to live in the country’s notorious prison camps after they were found guilty by association.

"They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on," one of the unidentified sources told the newspaper.

"Kim's wife once belonged to the same group, it is possible that these executions are more about Kim's wife," Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo's Waseda University and an authority on North Korean affairs, told The Daily Telegraph.

"If these people had only made pornographic videos, then it is simply not believable that their punishment was execution," he said. "They could have been made to disappear into the prison system there instead. There is a political reason behind this."

Hyon Song-wol, the reputed ex-girlfriend of Kim Jong-un, was a singer in North Korea’s Unhasu Orchestra.

Kim met Hyon about a decade ago, before either of them was married. But he was later ordered to break off the relationship by his father Kim Jong-il and she married a soldier. Since then there have been rumors that the two were having an affair.

Hyon was a singer with the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, which is famous for revolutionary and propaganda songs and one of North Korea's most popular bands.

Hyon — whose songs included the titles “Footsteps of Soldiers” and “I Love Pyongyang” — reportedly married a soldier and had a child in 2006, but rumors suggested she carried on an affair with Kim.
