Thousands Of Penangites Of All Ages Walk In Solidarity With Lim Guan Eng
They chanted solidarity slogans, like "Hidup Guan Eng" and "Bebas Guan Eng".
Earlier today, at around 7am, a massive crowd of people in red, blue, green and yellow T-shirts marched for 2km to the Esplanade in support of Lim Guan Eng, chanting slogans, like "Hidup Guan Eng" and "Bebas Guan Eng". Malaysiakini estimated the numbers in 3K.
However, DAP Penang on their Facebook page claimed there were 5,000 people.
According to The Sun Daily, the area reverberated with the shouts of "Lim Guan Eng" during the 40-minute walk led by Lim. Traffic, too, gave way and honked to show their support, the report added.
The walk was organised after Lim was charged with graft and abuse of power at the Penang High Court on Friday regarding the purchase of his home on Jalan Pinhorn.
Among those who walked was businesswoman Asma, 46, who said she wanted to show her support to Lim's government. "There is no need for him to step down," she stressed when asked if Lim needed to take leave to fight the trial.
Another supporter was Khor See Beng, 55, who laughed at the accusations. "I support him as CM and his leadership," the Air Putih constituent said.
Also among them was Harnik Kaur, 50, who was with her family of seven from Butterworth. "We are behind him, we will not let him down," she said.
The solidarity march ended at about 9am after Lim's speech
Despite his predicament, Lim managed a few jokes during his speech.
He said BN opponents had been going on and on about Taman Manggis (mangosteen) until he started to "crave to eat the fruit".
"Alas, I was not charged with any case linked to Taman Manggis. The BN is lying again", said the DAP secretary-general.
While addressing the crowd, Lim said he was being prosecuted because BN desperately wanted to recapture Panang. "Can they do it? Can they do it?", he asked, to which the crowd shouted, "No."
