Why She Worked As A Cleaner For RapidKL Despite Holding A Diploma In Geomatics In Science
From sweeping floors to washing toilets and picking up trash, she did all.
We don't know her name. Her story, along with her photograph, was shared by Humans of Kuala Lumpur's Facebook page earlier today.
Currently, she is employed by RapidKL, working there as a technical Assistant. Her job requires her to handle the heavy and light repairs of trains, which, she said, is a complete shift from what she studied.
She graduated with a diploma in Geomatics in Science (Geographical Information System) from UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak, where she studied GPS and satellites.
However, at RapidKL, she had to teach herself what is a break caliper, the machines, PCU (Passenger Communications Unit), EHU, to learn how to hold a spanner.
However, before she got the job of the Technical Assistant, she was working as a cleaner, along with her mother. Her pay was RM900.
"I used to get lots of negativity or comments by my friends because I was told that I shouldn’t work here - anything but here. Especially since I just graduated with a diploma in Geomatics in Science (Geographical Information System) from UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak."
Later, she was offered a job in Damansara as a Technical Assistant for Acoustics. After working there for about a month, She turned the job down and continued being a cleaner at RapidKL. This is why:
"I was there for about a month and when I wanted to leave, the boss didn’t allow me to. He said that my birth date matched the Feng Shui of the company and even offered to get me a car and any amount of salary I could ask for. Thing is, there was no mentor for me to learn about the job from. And you will not be ikhlas (sincere) when you do your job if you're unhappy with the working conditions and demands."
Her bosses were surprised that a university student was working as a cleaner. There, she did all. Swept floors, washed toilets and picked up trash. And her reason for continuing to do so was amazing:
"If my mother can do this type of job to make ends meet, what makes you think you can’t? At least I feel what my mother goes through every day of her working life to provide me education all the way to university."
Now, her friends, who are on the dean list and have high-scores but still no job, constantly ask her how she got the job at RapidKL
In her own words, it really falls back onto effort and the willingness to learn.
