An online survey conducted by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) shows that 80 percent of the public prefers ride-sharing services over taxis

SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Syed Albar said accessibility was the main reason why majority of the public prefers Uber and GrabCar over conventional taxis

"However, I would not consider Uber and GrabCar as ‘ride sharing’ services, I prefer to see it as ‘e-hailing’ as they have problems too," he told The New Strait Times.

Albar also said that the full report has not been submitted to the Transport Ministry. However, the commission has studied the report thoroughly and have prepared proposals for the course of action.

"We have looked into the survey results and we will submit all of our views on how we should tackle this issue to the government. I've also met the chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) because these ride-sharing apps fall under MCMC," said Albar.

At the same time, he stressed that the taxi industry has to upgrade its standards to provide better service to the public

Albar said, "The taxi industry isn't doing very well currently. It needs a major change and reconstruction. We have completed a session with all stakeholders of the industry and a report has been completed."
