"We hope the percentage will continue to rise and we notice many youths came out to vote," Election Commission (EC) Chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah, while inspecting the polling process at SK Rakyat Jalan Bolhassan, told reporters, The Star Online reported.

While voting is generally considered to be a "boring affair", at SK Merpati Jepang polling station — retired policeman Jamil Mustapha showed that it doesn't necessarily have to be that way

The 77-year-old brought colours to the polling station as he showed up with a giant replica of a pen. What's more he was so enthusiastic to vote that he was seen standing in line at 6.30am in the morning.

Not just that, the senior citizen — who has never missed performing his civic duty of casting his vote since the very first Sarawak election in 1969 — also brought along two small jars of candies which he distributed to other voters as a form of charity, NST reported.

"Although my house is not far from the polling station, I will always come early to cast votes," Jamil was quoted as saying by NST.

Jamil first voted at age 21. He has 9 children and 25 grandchildren.
