A football fan in China has died of a stroke that doctors believe was brought on by him staying awake for three successive nights to watch the World Cup. Zhou Meng, a 39-year-old from Shanghai, collapsed on his sofa after suffering a stroke while watching the Saturday night match between Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Doctors said the man known to have high blood pressure had died of stroke caused by a brain haemorrhage.

The victim, who had not slept for the previous two nights, was rushed to a Shanghai hospital after suffering a stroke “caused by brain stem haemorrhage”. He was pronounced dead at 9pm that night, the Shanghai Daily reported. Relatives described him as a “keen football fan”.

A 25-year-old man football fan in Suzhou, Jiangsu province was found dead in front of his television at home on Saturday morning. Doctors attributed his death to sleep deprivation.

Hours later, a young man from Suzhou, who was not named, was found slumped in front of his computer screen as it broadcast the Chile-Australia match, the Shanghai Morning Post said.

The first Chinese victim of the 2014 World Cup appears to have been Li Mingqiang, a retired goalkeeper and football enthusiast from Liaoning province in northeast China. Mr Li, 51, suffered a heart attack on Saturday as he watched the Netherlands spring an unexpected pre-dawn thrashing on Spain, the defending world champions.
