Tun M Confirms SST Will Be Back In September

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed in a press conference that the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will be reintroduced in September

According to The Star Online, he was speaking to members of the media after a Cabinet meeting today, 30 May.

However, the Prime Minister added that the implementation will require legislation to be enacted in Parliament.

The tax will be replacing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that is scheduled to be zero-rated come 1 June

It was confirmed by the Finance Ministry last week that the government will be reintroducing the SST to make up for the shortfall in government revenue.

"The shortfall from GST which is to be zero-rated effective 1 June 2018 will be cushioned by specific revenue and expenditure measures that shall be announced in due course," read the official statement posted by the Ministry.
