MP Datuk Yahya Lampong says foreign voters caused only a minimal impact on the election results

KOTA KINABALU: Foreigners who became voters after being issued Malaysian identity cards through dubious means caused only a minimal impact in the outcome of elections here, a veteran Sabah politician said.

The presence of these new voters would be felt only in certain constituencies, such as the state seats of Karambunai, Lahad Datu and Kunak, former deputy minister and MP Datuk Yahya Lampong told the Royal Commission of Inquiry yesterday.

“They, however, would not have an impact in interior seats such as Tambunan,” Yahya, who was the 203rd witness to give evidence to the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the presence of illegal immigrants in Sabah, said yesterday.

Yahya added that the presence of foreigners in Sabah was generally accepted by the people, especially those living in coastal areas of the state and this was because of the historical linkages between Sabah and places like southern Philippines as well as certain provinces of Indonesia.

Bangladesh High Commissioner says claims of 40,000 Bangladeshis voting in GE13 is a absurd

The Bangladesh High Commission here has dismissed allegations of its citizens voting in the 13th general election as “absurd”. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia A.K.M. Atiqur Rahman said his office had no knowledge of his country's citizens voting here on May 5.

He said the propaganda of Bangladeshis voting in the 13th general election (GE13) was nothing but “a mere fabrication by some interest groups and a sheer misrepresentation of facts”, he told a press conference, here, today.

“I want to clarify that it is absurd that 40,000 Bangladeshis had come to Malaysia within a week to vote. This was claimed by some in the print and online media.

“Till today, the High Commission does not have any information of any Bangladeshi citizen wrongfully and mischievously voting in the GE13,” he added.

Atiqur added that the “propaganda” of Bangladeshis voting in Malaysia was a misrepresentation of facts.
“The efforts to depict Bangladeshis as phantom voters may put innocent people under threat, as well as paint a negative image of our country.”

Atiqur hoped that all quarters refrain from spreading such rumours in the print, electronic and social media, that unneccesarily related Bangladesh to an exclusively domestic issue of Malaysia.

Royal Commission of Inquiry found that 66,000 illegal aliens in Sabah received blue ICs

Sarawak National Registration Department (NRD) director Datuk Abu Bakar Mat testified at the RCI here today that 5,373 immigrants in Sarawak have been issued blue ICs from 1963 to 2012.

About 66,000 immigrants in Sabah have received blue ICs since 1963, a whopping 12 times more than those in Sarawak, the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants heard today.

Sarawak Registration Department director Abu Bakar Mat said “this is due to the location of Sarawak and Sabah. The geographical location of Sabah which is near the Philippines caused the population of immigrants in Sabah to see more increase compared to Sarawak”.

Some Pakistani and Indian foreigners have also previously testified at the RCI about obtaining blue ICs within just a few years of arriving in Sabah and subsequently voting in elections.

Deputy IGP says impossible for foreigners to vote

It is impossible for foreigners to vote in tomorrow’s polls and police will act if it happens, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.

He said no police reports have been lodged on phantom voters planning to cast their ballots in Election 2013, adding that additional flights at this time are not unusual.

“There are rumours that many foreigners will be brought in to vote — Bangladeshis, Filipinos, Indonesians — but it is impossible that this will happen,” Khalid said.

“We will assist SPR in making sure that there are no phantom voters... if SPR informs us that unregistered voters are trying to come in, we’ll take action,” he said.

EC says it is not an offence to sponsor traveling expenses of voters

"It is not an offence to offer to pay for a voter's travelling expenses in order for him to go home and vote," chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said.

Abdul Aziz also said that it is however an offence if the sponsored individual was asked to vote for a specific party or candidate.

He was referring to the allegation made by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that more than 40,000 dubious voters from Sabah and Sarawak had been flown in to cast their votes on Sunday.

East Malaysian voters fly in to Peninsular Malaysia: UMNO says it's normal, but Ambiga says it's an offence

"And today Najib indeed appears to have been caught red-handed, bringing in dubious workers from the two East Malaysian states to vote BN in marginal seats in peninsular Malaysia," says SarawakReport.

Party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the flights were paid for by “friends” of Barisan Nasional (BN), Reuters reported this evening.

Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan also says, "There is no substance whatsoever to opposition allegations that passengers were anything other than registered Malaysian voters."

Ambiga dismissed Tengku Adnan’s claim that they were normal during elections, saying: “Planeloads are so unusual. Are they living or working in east Malaysia? Why is it they’re in such large groups?"

Ambiga says, “You’ve got to give it to everybody. That’s the test. You can’t be selective."

Anwar says Pakatan Rakyat has “credible” documentary evidence that groups of foreign nationals have been brought in on 16 daily chartered flights, including the usage of a Boeing 747, since April 25.

Anwar says, "Apart from civilian flights, the military is also being used. We have information that the C130 Hercules is used to move phantom voters to smaller airports like Batu Berendam and Ipoh.”

Staff insiders at Air Asia and Malaysian Airways have just leaked the devastating email interchanges, which lay bare the whole operation with both sets of emails implicating the Prime Minister personally in the extraordinary operation.

Khalid Ibrahim berkata, “Bagi saya dakwaan ini sengaja dibangkitkan kerana sudah tidak ada isu lain lagi untuk mereka gunakan bagi memancing undi."

"As per Tony’s email" referring to Tony Fernandes, CEO of Air Asia and owner of QPR FC, says SarawakReport. "Air Asia, which is hand in glove with the Malaysian powers that be, needs to come out and explain each of these flights immediately – and the role of the PM in organising them."

"Charter planes arriving just before the election and leaving straight after! Is this what BN mean about ‘winning’ back Selangor at any price?" says SarawakReport

The information on the flights was provided by staff from flag carrier MAS and budget airline AirAsia, the PKR de facto leader said.
