best-news.usWhat is vertical birth?
Vertical birth is any position where the baby is actually dropped out of the birth canal as opposed to being pushed out of the birth canal.
lifechiropracticcentre.caIn the Andes and Amazon areas of South America, giving birth in a vertical position is commonly practiced. Indigenous women in these regions do not give birth in a a horizontal position.
uvm.eduAdvantages of vertical birth
Less pain is felt by the mother as the baby descents past the sacrum due to the fact that there is no pressure (by a bed) on this part of her body & perineal tissues stretch more effectively, reducing need for postpartum repairs.
icpa4kids.orgGravity helps baby descend, baby is also better able to present naturally in the mother's pelvis, and rotates into more favourable positions, if needed, while the mother is upright.
uvm.eduDisadvantages of vertical birth
It may be difficult for the doctor to access the baby; the mother may also be subject to more perineal tears, more bleeding than on horizontal birthing and too much effort on patient's legs.
