It's official: Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, and Climate Change (MESTECC) Minister Yeo Bee Yin is expecting her first child
New Straits Times announced today, 16 January, that Yeo is currently in the third trimester and is expected to deliver her first child near the end of March.
On 29 March 2019, she tied the knot with IOI Properties Group chief executive officer Lee Yeow Seng.
According to the English daily, Yeo will be the first minister in Malaysia to deliver while in sitting in office
Women politicians who deliver while sitting in their posts are rare, even in the US and UK.
In 2018, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth made history as the first sitting US senator to give birth, reported BBC.
Sitting world leaders who give birth are rarer still, with only two recorded in recent history, according to Quartz: New Zealand's Jacinda Ardern and three decades prior, Pakistan's two-time Prime Minister, the late Benazir Bhutto.
