A 78-year-old man handed RM100,000 in cash to two men after they offered him RM500, claiming it was "financial assistance" from the government
Temerloh police chief ACP Mohd Nasyim Bahron said the victim met the two unidentified suspects at a restaurant in Bera, Pahang, on 18 December.
He said the men told the victim they could help him obtain government aid and attempted to gain his trust by giving him RM500, which they claimed was a government contribution.
"To convince the victim, the suspects handed him RM500, saying it was government assistance," Mohd Nasyim said.
According to him, the duo later persuaded the victim to join a programme they claimed was sponsored by the government, promising monthly returns of 20%.
Enticed by the offer, the victim was taken to a bank, where he withdrew RM100,000 from his savings and handed the money to the suspects
After receiving the cash, the suspects fled, leaving the victim at the bank.
The victim lodged a police report the following day, reported Bernama.
Mohd Nasyim said police are now tracking down the suspects and warned the public not to fall for financial offers made by unknown individuals.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
