The award was established on 20 October 2009 by FIFA in order to award the player, male or female, judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant goal of the year.

In February, Faiz Subri scored a stunning goal with a swerving free kick at the Stadium Bandaraya in Penang. Footage of his physics-defying goal went viral, instantly catapulting Faiz into international fame.

His free kick from 35 metres out reminded football fans of a similar wonder goal scored by Roberto Carlos against France in 1998.

Faiz is nominated alongside some of the world's greatest football players right now, including Lionel Messi and Neymar

Messi's entry was a sublime free kick he scored in Argentina's Copa Centenario match against the United States while Neymar was included for a Barcelona goal in which the Brazilian flicked the ball over an opponent's head and volleyed home.
