[PHOTOS] 7 Big Club Managers Who Flopped Like David Moyes
Just like David Moyes, each manager was a sign of promise and talent. Unfortunately, things did not turn out well for these managers as their clubs failed miserably. Here we take a look at 7 managers who did not get the job done. Do you think these are the worst managerial flops?
1. Andre Villas Boas Failed To Bring Chelsea To The Top 4 After Falling Out With His Players
Having guided Portuguese giants FC Porto to domestic and European success during a solitary season in charge at Estadio do Dragao, Villas-Boas further followed in mentor Jose Mourinho's footsteps by taking the reigns at Chelsea in 2011. While hopes were high that the youthful 'AVB' would be able to enjoy similar success to his compatriot at Stamford Bridge, it never quite happened for him in West London and he was swiftly sacked by the club following a defeat to West Brom in March 2012 that left Chelsea adrift outside of the top four.
givemesport.comAt Chelsea, Villas-Boas’ greatest problem was that he did not react well to scrutiny or pressure and did not seem to know how to manage adversity. The great skill of the very best managers is in knowing how to quickly change the narrative and avoid being stuck in a downward spiral of negativity.
telegraph.co.ukVillas-Boas also appeared to have a difficult working relationship with senior players at Chelsea, several of whom were only slightly younger than him. Nicolas Anelka, 32, and experienced defender Alex left the club early in his reign and after Frank Lampard, 33, was left out of the team he said playing under Villas-Boas had "not been ideal".
bbc.com2. Carlos Quieroz Threw Away An 8 Point Lead And Failed To Win The Title With Real Madrid
Seen as the bright young thing of world coaching following his success as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two at Manchester United, Carlos Queiroz started life as Real Madrid boss superbly. Supplied with one of the most glittering squads ever assembled, the Portuguese led the Galacticos to a commanding position at the top of La Liga and a Champions League quarter-final by early March.
goal.comHis fate was sealed by a series of disastrous results since Christmas, culminating in an unprecedented five-game losing run at the end of the season.Queiroz's downfall looked unlikely at the start of March, when his team were chasing a treble of the Primera Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. The Copa del Rey final was the catalyst to the slide as Real lost 3-2 to Real Zaragoza in a game which emphasised their defensive fragility. And they threw away an eight-point lead in the league, allowing Valencia to coast to the title.
bbc.co.ukSacked after just one season, Portuguese Queiroz returned to Manchester United to resume his position as assistant manager. He later took charge of his native Portugal and most recently guided Iran to qualification for this summer's World Cup.
givemesport.com3. Luiz Felipe Scolari Just Lasted 7 Months At Chelsea Despite Leading Portugal To The Euro 2004 Final
Appointed to the role as boss at Stamford Bridge while still in charge of Portugal at Euro 2008, 'Big Phil' lasted just seven months before being given his marching orders after a poor run of form in the Premier League.
givemesport.comLuiz Felipe Scolari arrived at Chelsea in 2008 with a big reputation having led his country Brazil to World Cup glory just six years earlier, as well as guiding Portugal to the final of Euro 2004. However, despite an impressive start - with the club thrashing Portsmouth 4-0 and playing some expansive football on his debut - the west Londoners soon began to struggle. The Blues fell away in the title race and had a terrible record against the big teams, losing home and away to Liverpool, as well as against Manchester United and Arsenal.
goal.comHe was eventually put out of his misery in February 2009. His temporary replacement Guus Hiddink immediately restored the club's fortunes by winning the FA Cup.
goal.com4. Roy Hodgson Ensured Liverpool Had The Worst Start In History By Dropping Into The Bottom Three Of The League
Hodgson endured a tough start in his new job, as his side were knocked out of the Carling Cup by League Two Northampton at Anfield on 22 September, while a 2-1 home defeat to Blackpool on 3 October meant they dropped into the bottom three of the top flight for the first time since September 1964.
bbc.co.ukDespite having proved himself worthy following a successful three-year spell with Fulham, Hodgson - who is now in charge of the English national team, of course - was never a popular choice with the majority of the Anfield faithful.
givemesport.com"Liverpool have gone backwards and the players he has brought in just haven't worked. I think unfortunately Roy was the wrong man at the wrong time for Liverpool and it has been a case of thanks but no thanks." former Liverpool defender now BBC Sport football expert Mark Lawrenson said.
bbc.co.uk5. Jacques Santini Left Tottenham After Just 13 Games In Charge Due To 'Personal Problems'
Perhaps the most obvious choice for inclusion on such a list is Santini, after the Frenchman lasted just 13 games as manager of Tottenham Hotspur back in 2004. Having initially agreed to take the role at White Hart Lane prior to the end of Euro 2004, former Saint-Étienne midfielder Santini departed the club citing personal reasons before making any real lasting impression.
givemesport.comSantini took the managerial position at Tottenham after euro 2004, but resigned soon after, ostensibly because of personal problems. However, it was widely reported that a series of disagreements with then Sporting Director Frank Arnesen had led to his departure.
telegraph.co.ukThere were strong rumours last night that the French coach quit following a heated bust-up when he found out that the board supported not him but Arnesen. He has a three-month notice period but the board knew they had a ready-made replacement in Martin Jol, the assistant coach.
telegraph.co.uk6. Jürgen Klinsmann Erratic Training Methods Almost Made Bayern Munich Not Qualifying For The Champions League
Germany's surprise performance as hosts at the 2006 World Cup, when they finished third, had seen Jurgen Klinsmann regarded as one of the game's most promising young coaches. But this reputation was destroyed following a horrific spell in charge of the club he had previously played for. Inheriting the best squad in Germany in the summer of 2008, by the time he was sacked in April the following year Bayern were not only out of all competitions, they were in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League.
goal.comHis list of mistakes and bad results on their own might not have been enough to warrant the sack but they were in painfully sharp contrast to his promises of a brave new Bavarian world (scientific methods, top-level tactics, personal and collective improvement).
theguardian.com7. Despite Winning The Carling Cup in 2007, Juande Ramos Started The 2008 Season With "Less Points Than A Triangle" After 8 Matches
History is not always written by the winners - Juande Ramos is the only coach to have won anything at Tottenham in the last 15 years but he is remembered as the bumbling boss who was sacked after a year.
dailymail.co.ukThe fall from grace was swift. Whatever Ramos had, he lost. When the new season started, Spurs could not win: bottom with two points from eight games, it was their worst start. On 25 October 2008, Ramos was sacked. He had been there one day short of a year. He has not been back.
theguardian.comWith no wins from their opening eight matches, Spurs were the laughing stock, with North London rivals Arsenal crowing that “even a triangle has more points.”
