Apple offers iPhone trade-in program, lets you exchange your old model

Apple Inc will give customers, who wants to trade-in their old iphones, a credit to be used toward the purchase of a new model.

Apple’s US retail outlets are now accepting devices, said Amy Bessette, a spokeswoman for Apple. The initiative is starting just before the next iPhone’s debut on 10 September.

The money paid back depends on the condition of the phone. An iPhone 5 with 64 gigabytes of memory can fetch $350 through Gazelle’s website, while an iPhone 3GS may receive only $10. The most that any iPhone will sell for at an Apple Store is $280.

How to get the trade-in

To get the trade-in, customers must show that there iPhone works by turning it on and showing it to the Apple employee.

The employee will then input the information into a specialized system about the iPhone they wish to trade-in, including its condition before the customers are told its value but the maximum amount a user can get for their old iPhone is $280.

In order to be eligible for the program, the customer has to be under a contract from a carrier. Interestingly, the credit can’t be used to buy a device that is not under a contract or that isn’t locked.
