Good news Facebook fans! The social media service company released a new app for Android over the weekend

Well, technically it's not really new. Rather, it's a stripped down version of the full Facebook app.

Facebook has launched a stripped-down version of its app aimed at the huge potential user base in emerging markets.

How's this different from your Facebook app? First, FB lite is only 1MB in size! In comparison, the full Facebook app is about 25MB on Android.

The new app will be less than 1MB in size, and includes the News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and other bits and pieces familiar to users of the social network.

The app is also targeted at developing countries with slow, laggy Internet and data services. Sounds like the perfect app for us Malaysians...

Features like video viewing and finding nearby friends have been removed to create a smooth experience on older Android phones

Data-heavy features like video and locations services aren't supported, but users will be able to receive push notifications and share pictures on the fly. The app has also been optimized to take advantage of 2G networks and work in areas with a bad signal.

Facebook has been pushing hard to get people in developing countries online. In May, Facebook released Internet.org, which offers people free data services
