change.orgGoogle's axeing of Reader explained
Under CEO Larry Page, Google has made a practice of “spring cleaning” throughout all the seasons so it can narrow its focus. Reader was just a another casualty on the latest closure list.
allthingsd.comAn unnamed source says that the closure is at least partly because of Google’s reluctance to build out the staff and infrastructure needed to deal with legal and privacy issues related to the product.
theverge.comGoogle is also trying to better orient itself so that it stops getting into trouble with repeated missteps around compliance issues, particularly privacy.
allthingsd.comGoogle is trying to position the company so that it stops facing expensive privacy lawsuits by adding dedicated staff to deal with those issues to each of its teams.
theverge.comGoogle didn’t have a product manager or full-time engineer responsible for Reader, so the company didn’t want to add in the additional infrastructure and staff, the sources said.
allthingsd.comFormer Reader product manager Nick Baum says, "if it’s a consumer product at Google that’s not making money, unless it’s going to get to 100 million users it’s not worth doing."
