Google just debuted a new streaming media stick called Chromecast that beams what’s happening on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to your television.

Google is taking another stab at being the center of your living room, and this time they've opted for an affordable, platform-agnostic device called Chromecast.

The search-and-media giant debuted Chromecast at a press event this morning in San Francisco. The new device brings Apple TV’s Airplay-like functionality for both Android and iOS mobile devices.

Chromecast is based on a stripped-down version of Chrome OS, and interoperable with a multitude of devices. “We will not force you to have the same operating system on all of your devices,” Google executive Mario Queiroz said during the announcement Wednesday.

When using Chromecast mode on Google Chrome, your TV essentially acts as a second display. The only difference is that the version of Chrome that shows up on your TV will be optimized for content consumption, so things like the address bar will be missing.
