Ubuntu Edge: The crowd-funded smartphone

The Ubuntu Edge is a proposed "high concept" smartphone announced by Canonical Ltd. on 22 July 2013. Canonical is seeking to crowdfund a production run of around 40,000 units through Indiegogo.

It has the highest target of any crowdfunded project to date, $32,000,000 over a one-month campaign. The Edge is not intended to go into mass production after the initial run.

The Edge is designed as a hybrid device, which will function as a high-end smartphone, or—when used with a monitor, keyboard and mouse—be able to operate as a conventional desktop PC running Ubuntu.

It will also house Dual-LTE for connectivity along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. The processors are to be finalized in the later stage, but expect nothing less than an octa-core to power this one.

While the Ubuntu Touch mobile interface looks fairly slick and has many useful features, app developers often complain that it severely shortens battery life. For many consumers, that can be a deal-breaker -- especially for a pricey phone.
