Chinese labor group alleges worker abuse by Apple supplier Pegatron

A new report from a Chinese workers-rights group alleges labor abuses at a major Apple Inc. contractor the company has been using more as it shifts some work from longtime supplier Foxconn.

The report alleges safety and environmental violations; the withholding of worker pay or the identification cards they need to work elsewhere; and poor living conditions at China-based factories owned by Taiwan's Pegatron Corp. and two subsidiaries.

"The Pegatron factories are violating a great number of international and Chinese laws and standards as well as the standards of Apple's own social responsibility code of conduct," it said in the report.

Such breaches would violate both Chinese law and Apple’s supplier policy, and would show the extent of the challenge for Apple to uphold the relatively high labor standards it has set in a Chinese electronics-supply chain where breaches in labor law are common.

The labor abuse report also talks about Apple's budget phone

The report appears to add more grounding to rumors surrounding a potential, upcoming budget model — the so-called "iPhone 5C." Over the weekend, an image of plastic retail packaging for budget iPhones surfaced on a Chinese discussion forum.

"Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines," a page in the report reads. "This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple."

Apple says it will probe claims of Pegatron labor violations

Apple said that Pegatron employees typically work about 46 hours per week and that overtime isn’t viewed as beneficial to the company. In fact, it says it works with suppliers such as Pegratron to prevent any overtime work and that it regularly performs audits to check up on conditions.

Apple, in a statement, said it is “committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain.” It said that it has conducted 15 comprehensive audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007, including surprise audits within the past 18 months.
