It's Official! Nokia Launches Android Phones X, X+ And XL

Barely a week after the device made its first official public appearance at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Nokia X is now in Malaysia. Just moments ago, Nokia Malaysia has officially launched the new device in our shores and users will be able to see it in stores within this week itself.

Priced at RM 399, customers are able to obtain the device from Nokia dealers throughout the country as well as through Lowyat.NET’s own online shop – Storekini.com.

Up until now Nokia's suite of smartphones has used the Windows operating system. The announcement had been widely expected despite Microsoft detailing plans to buy Nokia's mobile division at the end of 2013.

Microsoft is chasing after Android and it will soon have its own flavor to either push ahead with or kill. The Nokia X just feels like an experimental project created by a team of determined engineers who wanted to see this phone on shelves.

All three run dual-core 1Ghz Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm and are available in green, red, yellow, red and bright blue.

The X, X+ and XL will range in price from 89 euros (£74) to 109 euros.

The Nokia X+, identical in appearance to the X, also boosts both the storage and memory. Apart from the internal storage and dual-SIM support, the Nokia X only really differs from the Lumia 520 on the outside, with a lack of Windows Phone’s three capacitive buttons and a slight camera change.

The Android-powered X and X+ do have a whiff of Redmond about it: Nokia's custom UI is tile-based, a nod to Windows Phone's own live tiles, including the ability to resize tiles. It will also feature Fastlane.

Nokia's XL takes a slightly different approach, with a 5-inch display and a combination of a 5-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing one. Nokia is positioning the XL as "great for Skype, while the X and X+ both ship with just a 3-megapixel fixed focus camera.

Nokia will ditch many of the Google services that come with Android, which Google lets phone makers customize at will.

More than 1.1 million devices running Android are expected to ship this year compared with 360,000 using the Windows operating system, according to data from research analysts Gartner.

The phone will come with a range of Microsoft services already onboard: Skype, Nokia MixRadio and OneDrive. "Nokia X takes people to Microsoft's cloud not to Google's. This was very deliberate... with this Microsoft will be able to reach people it has never before," said the head of devices and services at Nokia Stephen Elop - who is soon to be head of Microsoft's devices business.

Users who buy one of the X models will be able to use Microsoft's free cloud-storage system, OneDrive. The software giant's email software, Outlook, will also ship as standard on all models.
