Soon, You'll Be Able To Roll Up Your E-Reader Into Three Folds
A bendable, foldable OLED screen from Semiconductor Energy Lab's Advance Film Device group and Nokia.
At a display tech conference in San Diego this week, Nokia and the Semiconductor Energy Lab's Advanced Film Device group presented two new displays that can be folded in two or three folds while displaying video
One of the two types is a "book-type" display that can be folded in two like a book. The other is a "three-fold" display that can be folded in three.
nikkeibp.co.jpBoth the displays are basic HD 5.9-inch organic light-emitting diode screens
Their pixel count and resolution are 1,280 x 720 and 249ppi, respectively. They were realized by using the "WTC" structure, which combines white light-emitting OLEDs and color filter.
slate.comOLED is the tech of choice for folding screens because it uses thin, organic films that light up from electrical current and can be made from flexible materials.
slate.comThe process used behind making the displays:
The display is made by forming a release layer, sealing layer and color filter layer in this order on a glass substrate. And a release layer, sealing layer, TFT layer and OLED layer are formed in this order on another glass substrate.
nikkeibp.co.jpThen, the color filter layer and OLED layer are attached to each other, and the glass substrates are peeled off and replaced with flexible substrates.
slate.comAs a result, the color filter, TFT and OLED layers are sandwiched between two sets of a sealing layer and flexible substrate. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the two layers of the adhesive used to attach the sealing layer to the flexible substrate as well as the color filter to the OLED layer is as high as 7 x 10-7g/m2/day.
nikkeibp.co.jpThe folds in the displays can get down to a radius of between 2 and milimeters, and you can bend the displays about 100,000 times before they wear out
A flexible Kindle made of this stuff might not last a lifetime, but you could certainly tote it around in your pocket for a few years.
