The story behind Tile the app

Tile was created by software and hardware engineers Mike Farley and Nick Evans. They built the product out of Tandem Capital, a mobile-focused accelerator in Burlingame, Calif.

Would you find a tracker device like Tile useful in your daily life? Or is a gadget for your gadgets too much?

If you have an annoying habit of losing things, a new device that can be attached to any object and located with a smartphone app may be the solution to your problems.

The Tile, a matchbook-sized square linked up to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, lets you see how close you are to the missing item, within a 50 to 150-foot range.

And even if the item travels out of this range, other smartphones with the same app can also detect it, and an alert is automatically sent to you if they have it in their range.

How does 'Tile' works

The Tile is linked up to your smartphone app via Bluetooth.
It has a hole in it that makes it attachable to a keyring, and a double-sided adhesive that lets you stick it on to different objects.

Tile works with iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad Mini, iPad 3rd and 4th gen, and iPod Touch 5th gen.

Called the first device of its kind, Tile sends out a signal that puts other Tile apps on the search for your missing item. All of this happens in the background.

As a result, if someone else running the Tile app comes within range of your lost object, it will discretely and securely identify your item and send you a notification of its location.

You can add up to 10 Tiles on a single account. Log into the app on your own or your friend's iPhone/iPad and pinpoint the Tile's location within an advertised range of 50 to 150 feet.

A US$25 Tile has battery life for one year, at which time you'll need to replace it and recycle the old one for reuse.

When you log into the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how close or far away you are from the Tile

Am I getting warmer? When you log into the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how close or far away you are from the Tile.
