To prep you for the event which will happen on 4 December, Uber Malaysia has asked some of the leaders for tips and advice to potential pitchers. Time to jot down some notes!
1. Be creative and think outside of the box
"Make sure you think out of the box as the market is saturated with mediocre ideas," said Roen Cian Nagapan, CEO of The Group.
2. Be truthful towards your business
According to Kenny Goh, CEO of Macrokiosk, "Be truthful and real towards your venture and business idea and don't just do it for the sake of doing it."
3. Gotta be confident - it's YOUR idea, after all!
"No one knows your pitch better than you — it is your idea after all! Be confident and show us what you got!" said Wing Lee, CEO of YTL Communications.
4. Look at your business pitch from different angles
Leon Foong, who is the general manager of Uber Malaysia believes looking at a business pitch from different angles is of utmost importance. "Make sure your idea and business plans are airtight. Look at it from as many perspectives as possible, try to poke holes in it as much as you can. That way, you can ensure that your pitch is compelling and your idea is robust."
5. Have a clear direction - an idea without direction is futile
"The key is to understand your market and be clear with the presentation of your ideas. We want dreamers with ideas but know exactly how they can get there is equally important," said Carey Ng, who is the youngest National Director of Miss Universe Malaysia (MUMO).
6. Know what sustains your business and follow your passion
Former Miss World & Universe Malaysia, Deborah Priya Henry who runs her own charity organisation believes passion is key to sustaining a business. "The barrier to entry for start-ups is low so it's easy for anyone to have a good idea, but the challenge is sustainability, keeping the flame alight as it were. How passionate are you? What fuels you?"
7. Speak from your heart and know what you're presenting
The 30-year old Malaysia-born entrepreneur, Bryan Loo, wants pitchers to speak from the heart - without trying too hard. "Speak from your heart. Never try to impress people without knowing what you're saying. Your passion speaks everything."
8. You might not have all the answers and that's ok
Timothy Johnson, who handles the marketing department over at INTI International University & Colleges said, "You must believe in your pitch. In the beginning, you may not have all the answers but maybe the questions asked will provoke and instigate you to go deeper."
9. Most importantly, be yourself and enjoy the ride!
Fui Yu, co-founder of Kaodim, leading marketplace for local services wants pitchers to be comfortable. "I’m a really nice guy, and happy to hear everything you have to say. So be yourself, and enjoy the ride."
