Woman Distracted By Facebook So Much She Falls 65 Feet Into Sea

A Taiwanese woman fell from a pier and plunged 65 feet into the sea, while she was checking Facebook on her phone.

As many would admit, social networking sites like Facebook are a major distraction. A woman tourist in Sydney fell into deep sea while browsing Facebook on her mobile phone!

The woman, who hasn't been named, was walking on a pier in Melbourne, Australia, Monday night, when she she took one step too many and fell in the water.

Distracted by Facebook, she didn't realize the pier was coming to an end, according to local police.

A witness called for help and police rushed to the woman's aid. They found her flailing around in the water, about 20 meters (65 feet) from the pier.

"She was still out in the water lying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn't swim," Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the state water police told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

"She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized and said sorry."

She was reportedly floating on her back because she couldn't swim. She said:

"I was checking my Facebook page on the phone and I've fallen in."

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released

Police believe the tourist was on her way to visit the penguin colony that lives at the breakwater off the pier, and was looking at Facebook on her phone when fell into the water.

"With Facebook, or social media in general as far as we're concerned, if you're anywhere near the water just pay attention," Kelly said. "Especially if you can't swim."
