The Coral Triangle is a marine area located in the western Pacific Ocean. It includes the waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Solomon Islands.

Named for its staggering number of corals (nearly 600 different species of reef-building corals alone), the region also nurtures six of the world’s seven marine turtle species and more than 2000 species of reef fish

With a size of 1.5 acres, the island also houses the Maliangin Sanctuary - a protected area for coral reefs and turtle nesting grounds

Tentatively named Maliangin Sanctuary, the model island has a good representation of marine and coastal habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass, rocky shores and sandy beaches that are turtle nesting sites. Maliangin Island is also a significant fishing ground for small-scale and commercial fisheries.
