These 9 Laundry Hacks Will Help You Lower Your Electricity Bill

Save money the easy way.

1. Make sure you turn off the power supply

Even if the washing machine is off, it will still drain electricity from the grid if you haven't turned off the wall switch. So make sure to switch that off. To be safe, you can unplug the washing machine when not in use.

2. Only do your laundry when the load is full

This is true if you have a regular washing machine that cannot calculate the load and will use the same amount of electricity whether you're washing a few shirts or a week's worth of clothes.

Pro tip: However, if you’re using a washing machine that has inverter technology, the machine will have the ability to control the amount of energy used according to the laundry load, thus saving your electricity!

3. Wash with cold water

It takes a lot of electricity to warm up all the water so consider doing your laundry with cold water once in a while, you’ll save money ;)

4. Line-dry your clothes

If you commonly machine-dry your laundry, be sure not to overfill the load as it will dry more slowly and result in a pricier laundry cycle. Alternately, you can hang your clothes out to dry for free!

Pro tip: If the weather has been rainy or you live in a condo, use a laundry detergent that is specifically made for indoor drying so your clothes don't get that musty odour.

5. Invest in an eco-friendly washing machine

Eco-technologies ensure energy-saving so you don’t have to worry about it.

For example, Hitachi's Ultra Stream Wash has tub and pulsator rotation speeds that can be adjusted for optimum energy saving operation when washing both small and large loads.

6. Select lightweight bath towels

Heavyweight cotton towels that are excessively large may be comfy to wrap yourself in, but they take a toll on your electricity bill. Consider opting for more standard lightweight bath towels to save on energy.

7. Only invest in clothes you need

This is only a good idea if you find yourself frequently washing the same item because you consistently need to use it. For example, school or work uniforms, and children’s napkins or towels.

You may find it makes more sense to invest in a few more and washing one load at the end of the week, rather than using electricity every day to wash them daily.

8. Soak heavily soiled items before putting them in the machine

There’s nothing worse than having to repeat a wash because stains didn’t come out. For very dirty items, rub stains with household soap and soak them in soapy water, before putting them in the washing machine.

9. Let go of old machines

If your washing machine is over ten years old, the chances are it will make your energy bills unnecessarily high. Consider investing in a new model that will help bring your electricity bill down for the months to come.

For long-term savings on your electricity, invest in an energy-saving washing machine that will ensure lower bills while maintaining high performance

The Hitachi Ultra-Stream Wash uses Precise Powered Inverter Control for 36% energy saving!

The inverter control, tub, and pulsator rotation speed automatically adjusts according to the size of your laundry load. The machine will precisely calculate the optimum energy-saving operation, which means less electricity will be used to wash a small load as compared to a large load.

Meanwhile the 3-Step Eco Sensor detects the laundry amount and fabric type to enable the optimum setting for washing conditions.

This precise sensing ensures no wasted electricity, water, and time! :O

With Water Power Control, you have the ability to change the water flow from "Powerful" to "Soft," depending on whether you're washing thick items or delicate items.

The Shower Plus feature allows you to control the water level during the wash by looking through the glass lid. It's a great way to save on your water bill, without compromising the clean wash!

Finally, the Auto Power Off feature will ensure you save electricity as the washing machine automatically switches off once the laundry is finished.
