After over a decade of serving up pad thai and bubble tea across Thailand, foodpanda has announced that it is pulling the plug on its operations there — for good

The food delivery platform will officially shut down in Thailand on 23 May, marking the end of a long and bumpy ride.

According to its German parent company, Delivery Hero, the decision is part of a larger strategic move to focus on more profitable markets across the Asia-Pacific region.

Bangkok Post reported that despite its long presence in Thailand, foodpanda has struggled financially, never turning a profit in its 13 years of operations.

A statement to its delivery riders read, "Important announcement: We are in the process of ceasing operations – thank you for the wonderful times we've shared together.

"We regret to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to cease operations of the foodpanda platform for food and goods delivery in Thailand, effective 23 May 2025. Please check your email for more details. We sincerely thank you for your continued support."

Reports show that the company has accumulated losses of over 13 billion baht (RM1.7 million)

Thailand's highly competitive food delivery market has proven to be a tough space.

According to Bangkok Post, foodpanda currently holds just under 15% of the market, lagging behind local leader Lineman Wongnai (44%) and GrabFood (39.4%).

Attempts to sell off the Thai arm of the business last year were unsuccessful, which may have prompted the final decision to exit.

In an official statement, foodpanda Thailand expressed gratitude to its customers, riders, and restaurant partners, and acknowledged that current market conditions no longer align with its long-term strategy

While the food delivery operations will end, foodpanda's regional team based in Thailand will continue to support Delivery Hero's Asia-Pacific businesses in functions like marketing and human resources.

The Nation Thailand reported that this exit comes as Delivery Hero continues to refine its global operations, having previously exited markets such as Denmark and Slovakia.
