According to Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zakaria Ahmad, the reason behind the assassination was still unknown

A Rapid Penang bus driver who was driving by heard the shots and proceeded to call the police. He continued his journey to the Weld Quay bus terminal, where he found traces of a stray bullet that ricocheted off the bus window.
