"The doctor asked me to reduce my activities," Dr Mahathir told reporters when met at the Putra World Trade Centre where the Umno general assembly is being held.
"I am already old ... The doctors have advised me to slow down," he said.
It is also learnt that Dr Mahathir had tendered his resignation because his concerns over certain dealings were ignored.

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has let go of his post as Petronas adviser effective yesterday, reports Utusan Malaysia.
According to Malay daily Utusan, sources said Mahathir felt it was time to cut back on his still-busy schedule. Since retiring in 2003, the 88-year-old Mahathir has held key posts in several top institutions.
The former prime minister said Monday that he had relinquished the post effective Dec 1, as he had been advised by his doctor to slow down.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to hospital for a chest infection today (Nov 18), the country’s official Bernama news agency reported.

"The medical team is closely monitoring his condition and is satisfied with his progress," the official Bernama news agency said, citing a statement from Mahathir's Perdana Leadership Foundation research institute.
