10 Jan: "For extremists like this group, we need the ISA"

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday suggested that the government bring back the repealed Internal Security Act (ISA) to control the actions of the "extremist minority" which he said has undermined the country's stability.

He said the group was immature and willing to make statements that touched on the sensitivities of other races as well as disrupted harmony in the country.

"For extremists like this group, we need the ISA," he told reporters.

Dr Mahathir responded thus when asked to comment on the racial tension that had been stirred up following the seizure of 551 copies of the Bible in the Malay and Iban languages by the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department last Thursday allegedly for contravening the state's Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988.

“If the people continue to be at logger-heads, they will be like the people in other countries, and end up killing one another. This is unfair to those who are not involved in this controversy,” he said.

In a blog posting, and citing the "cost down" principle, Mahathir said when a business is faced with competition or its cost of production reduces its profits, it can either increase prices or reduce costs.

"When a business is faced with competition or its cost of production reduces its profits, it can either increase prices or reduce cost. To a certain extent the price can be increased. This might cause a reduction in sale and also profits. It is far better to reduce cost and maintain or minimise the increase in price.

"The same can be done by Government. All its cost can be examined to determine which are truly necessary, which cost can be reduced, which service can be curtailed or modified etc. etc," Mahathir wrote.

"It examines the efficiency of the process, the material costs, the reduction of wastage and the speed and volume of production. Invariably, some costs can be reduced.

"Governments need money. It cannot function without money...But as the cost of Government increase over time, the taxes and rates will need to be increased...But the tax payers cannot suddenly come up with the money to pay the new taxes and charges."

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has again moved to defend car prices in Malaysia, deemed as possibly the second-highest in the world, claiming that the high tax rates imposed on vehicle purchases here were necessary to recoup funds spent by the government on fuel subsidies.

The Proton adviser also appeared to suggest that the heavy tax burden helps ensure that the national carmaker would not lose market share and money, which is needed for research and development on more fuel-saving technology, such as its work on developing electric and hybrid cars.

“The Malaysian government subsidises fuel prices. More cars on the road means more subsidies. To recover some of this money, the Government taxes motor vehicles including Proton. The high price of the cars is due to the taxes,” said Dr Mahathir.

“The only way to reduce car prices is to lower or abolish taxes. The Government would lose a lot of revenue. There will be affordable electric cars when battery prices come down considerably. That will take a long time.”

"Although the voting format has been changed, but money politics is still alive and kicking," Dr Mahathir said, declining to elaborate further.

He also defended democracy in Malaysia, arguing that while it was not perfect, it was still better than having people take to the streets.

“There has never been a possibility that PAS would lead the Federal Government,” he said in a column published in Umno mouthpiece “Utusan Malaysia” today.

The country’s longest serving prime minister said based on PAS’s performance in previous general elections, it was “obvious that PAS would not head the Government even though it partnered with DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat”.

“PAS can only be a junior partner if Pakatan ever forms the government and only as DAP’s puppet,” he added. “We saw what happened when PAS headed the Perak government,” he said, referring to the coalition helmed by PAS’s Datuk Seri Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin, but which was widely seen as a puppet to DAP.

He went on to say that although PAS broke the unity among Malays in 1959 when it brought up the issue of religion, since then it had not been able to show it could replace Umno as the party that represents the Malays.

“Where would PAS head to next? Would PAS defeat Umno with the help of DAP? Would DAP help PAS so that it becomes huge in Pakatan and form an Islamist government?” asked Dr Mahathir.

“Maybe some individuals are learning how to commit murder and robbery from the Internet as some pictures and videos uploaded display extreme violence that could have affected the community,” he said.

He said the distribution of explicit material on the Internet had contributed greatly to moral decay among youths and children and this has led to a sharp increase in sexual assaults and rapes as well as other criminal cases.

He said although the government had promised not to restrict Internet use at the outset, the changing situation warranted it as the spread of offensive material through the medium could also threaten national security.

"The menteri besar is my son, his name is Mukhriz, he is bald because I keep all the hair. He is bald because he is thinking what else can be done for the people of Kedah," he said at a carnival rakyat in Sungai Limau today to support the BN campaign.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants the Najib government to focus “more” on the “silent majority”.
He said entertaining the demands of the extremists groups was detrimental to the country.

“We have a government that is weak because of weak support from the people, and with a tendency to accede to the demands of extremists in the opposition. He said the administration of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is weak and feels it needs to entertain “unreasonable demands” from extremist groups, especially from the opposition, to remain relevant to the public.

“The political situation now is unstable because the perception is that the government is weak and the lunatic fringe now hold sway over politics in the country,” he said in his keynote address at the Perdana Discourse Series 17 here.

“The worst part is that they make extreme demands to unseat the government... the government can get rid of whatever they don’t like, but if you think that they will then say ‘thanks, we will support you now’, you are mistaken,”

“There are other ways to deal with extremists. Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said anytime is an appropriate time for GST, given that it is done in stages without panicking any tax payers.

“We should not suddenly introduce a new tax at a very high level. If it's a lower percentage, people will adopt the tax within days. But if it is very high, it will take more time”.

Asked on whether 6% is the right initial level for GST, he said: “I have to do detailed research and consult all the stakeholders (if I have to answer that question).”

“Our deficit has increased. One way to mitigate this is to reduce the subsidy, which should also be done in stages.

But if we reduce subsidy and the government’s expenses remains high, then there is no point,” he added.

7 Oct: "Some of them even requested that the questions during the interview, which was conducted in English, be translated into Malay"

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is concerned over the poor grasp of the English language among students as it will adversely affect their future.

The former prime minister said there were some from institutions of higher learning who did not master the language, resulting in them not getting a place in the employment sector.

For example, he said, recently 333 graduates of institutions of higher learning were called for a job interview related to information technology. "However, only seven were recruited as the rest did not know English. "Some of them even requested that the questions during the interview, which was conducted in English, be translated into Malay," he said.

Dr Mahathir said, while he was a fighter for Bahasa Melayu since 1947, he was pragmatic as English could not be sidelined. He hoped English would be widely used in science and mathmetics for the future of the students.

There is a need to rewrite Malaysian history books to include problems faced in the past and steps taken by the government to solve such issues, so as to offer a better understanding of the country's history to the younger generation.

According to Mahathir, this move would also help Malaysia to establish a more educated society, and "thus create more vocal leaders."

"We need to do a lot of things. We should also learn from the history of other countries such as why the Arab Spring occurred. Then we ask ourselves, do we want this to happen in this country?

"There are some people who literally say they want to see an Arab Spring in Malaysia. They prefer to ignore stability, peace and overthrow the leaders.

"Therefore, we need to settle down and understand what is democracy and tell them to trust the government," he added.

“If today the schism between the races is deeper, it is because the DAP reject the Malay/Chinese/Indian ‘kongsi... Racial polarisation has become more pronounced as a result. It will become more so in the future’,”

"Within the country and abroad, Chinese youths wearing black shirts and masks made up most of the demonstrators. Usually Malays make up the majority of the demonstrators," he said.

“The protests seem to be mainly a Chinese affair,” he added. “Although DAP and PKR participated in these demos, PAS members were noticeably absent”.

“This pact clearly benefited the chauvinist Chinese in DAP most, while PAS, the most Malay of Pakatan parties benefitted the least, winning only 21 seats against DAP’s 38 and PKR’S 30,”

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the outcome of the 13th general election showed a "Chinese tsunami", aided by a group of power-crazy Malays.

"But Kit Siang came and brought his 'Malaysian Malaysia' concept aimed at creating Chinese hatred towards the Malays; that they (the Malays) purportedly gained everything after independence,"

"Now urban extends to suburban areas as well. As a result, even Selangor has become a Chinese-majority state," he said.

"[The Malays] want to gain power in whatever way. Even if they have to sell their own race to get what they want, they will do it," he said.

"They think the general election is for getting positions, salary, job opportunity...but forget that it's about struggling for the people, religion and country

"If they (MCA) are not in it, who will represent the Chinese?"

"It would be a tricky thing to not have MCA leaders appointed (to the cabinet) because if there are no Chinese representatives, the situation will not be good for the government or country,"

“MCA is the main (Chinese-based) party in the coalition and government, and if they are not in it, who will represent the Chinese?

“Do we forget about them altogether or do we appoint someone not from MCA?” he told a press conference here yesterday.

"The fact remain that some Chinese do support the government, hence why they (MCA) won seven (Parliamentary) seats," said the former Prime Minister.

“That would depend on the Chinese whether they want to participate. If they want (DAP in the government), who do they want as their representatives?

“I am quite sure DAP would not want to participate unless it is in a dominant position because DAP has always maintained that MCA is Umno's lackey.”

“We see his performance was worse than Abdullah. This is something I myself did not expect.”

“I had hoped that this time BN would get more seats than in 2008 ... I’m quite disappointed and shocked to find out that in the end BN got less than in 2008,” Dr Mahathir told reporters.

Dr Mahathir also had said it was his personal opinion that Najib should give way to Deputy Umno president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin if BN only scores a slim majority in the elections.

“Work selflessly and don’t let anyone accuse you of being involved in corruption and so on. Serve the state and Malaysia,” he advised his son.

“The BN government will step up to the task and deliver all the promises it has made to develop Kedah on par with the other states,” he said

“The DAP is a racist and chauvinist party. Kit Siang is number one racist,” he told an indoor Umno-organised election gathering here last night.

“I will say it out as vocal as possible. Lim Kit Siang is a racist. Lim Kit Siang is a racist. Lim Kit Siang is an extremist racist,” he told a crowd of about 3,000 adoring BN supporters.

“Why am I calling Lim Kit Siang a racist? It’s because he has gone to contest in Gelang Patah where the majority there are Chinese. There, he will persuade the Chinese to hate the Malays,” he said.

“Permatang Pauh is not owned by Anwar. It’s owned by the people of Permatang Pauh. They have the right to choose a truthful representative, not a liar,” he said.

His message to Pakatan Rakyat was simple – "Forget about Putrajaya". Mahathir said instead, the Opposition should focus on improving their states, citing Kelantan as an example.

Electing a wrong political party into power could lead to an oppressive government that is less sympathetic towards the Malays.

"BN is extraordinary because they cooperate, work together and share with each other. The Opposition is merely a pact, each with its own goals and agendas.

"One aims to only gain power, the other brought their own brand of beliefs, and the third is only interested in forwarding their race," said Mahathir.

"Because of greed the people's votes split, turning a powerful majority into a weak minority."

Dr Mahathir also called for the sacking of Barisan members who contested as Independents, adding that they were impatient to become candidates.

“Isn't it something of a loss when you are sacked? If we are patient, wait a while, maybe we can be a candidate again but when you are sacked, you can't be a candidate,” he said.

The former prime minister said Ibrahim’s right-wing group is a force to be reckoned with, as it boasts a membership of over 400,000.

Tun Dr Mahathir said today he would prefer to avoid a scenario where Prime Minister Najib Razak would be unseated by his party Umno should he fail to garner a stronger mandate in Election 2013.

He said he had no suitable replacement in mind for the current Umno president if the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition is unsuccessful in forming two-thirds in Parliament.

“I don’t have a candidate in mind. What I said was only theoretical. Of course I don’t want that to happen,”

In 1981, he was appointed as president of UMNO. Under his leadership, BN won landslide victories in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995 and 1999 General Elections.

He remains an active political figure in his retirement, having become a strident critic of his handpicked successor, Abdullah Badawi, and actively supporting Abdullah's replacement by Najib Razak.

Mahathir resigned from UMNO in 2008 when it lost under Abdullah's regime. Mahathir immediately rejoined UMNO when Najib Tun Razak replaced Abdullah in 2009.

Upon his retirement, Mahathir became an adviser to flagship Malaysian companies, such as Proton and the oil company Petronas.
