A hot pot restaurant in China’s Hunan province has launched a “pay by face” promotion, or in the words of First We Feast, “hot pot or not?” special in which customers who are deemed attractive enough get free meals. The restaurant has installed a series of facial scanners that allow confident customers to submit their faces to a team of behind-the-scenes “specialists” for approval.[related]

Patrons of the restaurant will have their faces scanned by a machine, which will then be analysed by "beauty experts". The top 5 most good looking patrons who has the highest score will then be offered a free meal.

De Wei, a spokesman for the judges, explained: ‘The rules for the beauty contest are very detailed. We have four categories namely face, eyes, nose and mouth. ‘For face we look for example for a protruding forehead, whereabouts the tip of the noses, and its position with the top lip and chin. For real beauty the eyebrows need to be in line with the inner edges of the eyes and the outer edges of the nose.

‘For the eyes, the distance between the two pupils should be 63 mm for men and 51 mm for women. The distance between the outer most parts of each eye should be 90 mm for men and 85 mm for women. ‘For the nose, men should have a flat column and women should have a concave column. The width of one’s nose should be the same as that of one’s eye.’ De also added: ‘For the mouth, the side of one’s mouth should be only slightly larger than that of the distance between both eyes. The distance between the nostrils to the top lip should be one-third of the thickness of both lips together.’

But two restaurants in the city of Chongqing in southwest China are luring portly men into their venues by weighing them and offering discounts and free meals based on how heavy they are. Women, however, can only claim discounts if they are under a certain weight.

Men who weigh in at over 140 kg (about 300 lbs) on the scales by the front counter of the Nahuo restaurant can claim a free feed, while women who weigh in under 35 kg (about 75 lbs) can also enjoy the offer. Each time a customer is shown to be over or under the target weight, staff members burst into cheers and hand over vouchers.
