After A Series Of Offending Posts, Facebook Finally Deletes Sex Blogger Alvin Tan
The so-called agent provocateur's social media reign has come to a screeching halt.
After a string of controversial posts, Malaysia's most infamous blogger Alvin Tan's official Facebook page has been taken down. The sex blogger confirmed the news via his personal account:
Previously, on Friday, 5 police reports were made in Johor against Alvin, once a promising law student, for insulting Islam on Facebook
Johor police acting chief, Ramli Hassan who confirmed the reports said so far, police had received five reports - two in Johor Baru North and three at the Nusajaya police station.
He said police had also received reports on the unhappiness of the public over Tan's provocative action that was spread on social media where he used a page of the Quran as toilet paper.
"Many people are angry with his action, as I've received many calls from various parties. Previously, they could hold back, but this time Alvin's action is just too much," he said when contacted by Bernama.
His several previous Facebook posts have also offended Muslim sensibilities, including a video of him singing a cover of the Azan
In the video, Tan, bare-chested and wearing sunglasses, plays the piano while singing a lyrically garbled version of the Azan - the Muslim call to prayer. Underneath the video, he has written: "Please don't badger me about the wrong lyrics ... First, this is a cover, so creative modification is permitted. Second, I ain't a suicide bomber."
Watched over 400K times, it prompted extremely strong reactions, especially from Muslims. "Alvin Tan, shame on you!" one commented. "This is one of the [most] terrible insults I ever seen," another said. "Disgusting."
Others, though were more complimentary. "Good effort … I'm Muslim & I'm not angry," read one comment. "One day you will be one of us, brother."
On the other hand, the Rev. Deacon Dr Sherman Kuek OFS, Deacon of the Catholic Church in Malaysia, penned an open letter to Alvin for his "grossly disrespectful and utterly heinous act performed" by him in "bad will".
Currently, Alvin has been living in LA, California. He fled Malaysia more than a year ago in a move to seek political asylum in the US.
Many, including law-experts, believe that Tan posts these statuses, videos and pictures so he will receive hate messages, which he could later use to build his case to continue to seek asylum in the US from Malaysia.
