House Fire In Sabah Kills Mother And Son After They Failed To Escape Due To Window Grilles

A 46-year-old mother and her 8-year-old son were killed in a fire at their house in Tenom, Kota Kinabalu, earlier today, 6 January, after they failed to escape due to window grilles

Sabah's Fire and Rescue Department found the mother and son's bodies in a room on the upper floor of the house

"They were trapped in the house by the grilles," the Fire Department said, adding that the husband suffered 27 per cent burns on his body.

The Fire Department was alerted about the fire at 2.35am, after which six firefighters in two trucks arrived at the scene

The blaze was brought under control by 3.10am and the operation was completed at 5.15am. However, the Fire Department has yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.

In recent times, there has been a sharp increase in the number of fire incidents in the country. In 2017 alone, 49 cases were reported and half of them involved fatalities.

In light of which, a new amendment to the Electricity Regulation 1994 was added in November 2017, making it mandatory, from 2018 onwards, for all houses in the country to undergo electrical wiring inspection every 10 years.
