How An Unfortunate Accident In Edinburgh Claimed The Life Of A Bright JPA Scholar

Identified as Zhi Min Soh, a 23-year-old from Puchong. Zhi Min was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh.

She moved to Edinburgh, Scotland in 2015 after graduating with top marks from school and taking a Bachelor of Medicine degree at the International Medical University in KL.

The talented Zhi Min was a Public Service Department (JPA) Scholar who was pursuing her 4th year in medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

On Wednesday morning, 31 May, at about 08.30am, an unfortunate accident claimed the life of the young woman

What happened?

Zhi Min was hit by a minibus on Princes Street, at its junction with Lothian Road.

According to Edinburgh police, the 23-year-old fell off from her cycle after the wheels of her cycle were stuck in the tram tracks.

While she was taken to the Royal Infirmary for treatment, she died a short time later.

Police are still investigating the circumstances of her death

The Edinburgh police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Meanwhile, The Times reported Sergeant Fraser Wood of Edinburgh's road policing unit saying, "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Zhi Min's family and friends.

"I would like to thank those who stopped in Princes Street to assist Zhi Min on Wednesday morning. A significant number of witnesses have come forward and we are continuing to speak to them as part of our inquiries. I would again ask anyone who may be able to help our inquiries to contact us as soon as possible."

In the meantime, Deputy Foreign Minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican has assured the Foreign Ministry's necessary assistance and support to the woman's family in Malaysia

The Deputy Foreign Minister, who heads the UMNO Overseas Students’ Bureau (BPLN), took to the Facebook page of BPLN to issue a statement.

"Officials from the High Commission met with representatives from the university and local police regarding this incident," Reezal said.

The BPLN head also expressed his condolences to the young woman's family.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends for their loss. I have also personally contacted her mother to express my deepest condolences, and to assure her family that we will assist to the best extent possible during this difficult time," he added.

The Director of Undergraduate Medical Teaching at the University of Edinburgh, Dr David Kluth, meanwhile, said:

"Zhi Min was a talented, thoughtful student, who was well-respected by her peers and always keen to help. She will be deeply missed by the medical school community."

Meanwhile, the unfortunate accident which claimed Zhi Min's death has prompted fresh calls for protective measures to be introduced to the Edinburgh tram line

According to the BBC, lawyers have argued that warnings about tram track safety risks in Edinburgh for cyclists have been ignored by the city council.

The city council, however, said it had made "every effort" to raise awareness.
